Piano Tearoom at Ketteringham Hall, Ketteringham

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to afternoon tea in Norwich, with the likes of Biddy’s, Cafe Jungle and The Assembly House offering notoriously great options. There’s a new contender for the title of best afternoon tea, though – the Piano Tearoom.

Afternoon tea at Piano Tearoom, NorEatsAt home in an orangery connected to the historic Ketteringham Hall, the tearoom is a bright space for tucking into sandwiches, scones, and cakes, washed down with a range of loose-leafed teas. But the star of the show is the afternoon tea, which rivals the city’s best: delicate cakes are stacked above generously-filled sandwiches and meaty sausage rolls, the whole lot topped by fruit scones with just the right amount of spices and plenty of clotted cream (no disappointing whipped cream here!). If you prefer to end on a savoury note, we’d also recommend swapping a fruit scone for one of the cheese scones, which are buttery with a cheese flavour that’s strong without being overpowering.

It’s a traditional afternoon tea offering that’s perfectly executed, served by friendly staff and with plenty of tea top-ups. There’s also the main menu, boasting soups, sandwiches and tarts, as well as slices of cake and organic ice cream. It might be a trip out of the city centre, but we’d say it’s well worth it.
